Kerala home design is a mixture of traditional as well as modern style. These buildings epitomize nostalgia and embrace a wonderful traditional style. Here is a sample of a truly beautiful home which has a tailor-made Kerala design which is believed to be a fusion of both modern and traditional styles.
The exterior of the home follows a Kerala style of architecture. The only modern element that one may notice is the stone cladding on the pillars. Apparently the old house that once stood in the area was demolished to make room for this new abode but as much of the original material as possible was re-used. The built in wardrobes and cupboards have been made with the wooden frames of the old house. The wood from the attic was used to build the furniture. The roof tiles for the home were bought when an old school in the area was pulled down. A spacious porch can be seen in the front of the house where guests may be entertained.
The structure of the house follows a Kerala home design and has a spacious interior. To the right of the foyer is the dining area and to the left, the formal living room. There is custom made furniture that adds to the warm tone of the room plus the lighting in the interiors is also welcoming.
In total, there are four bedrooms in the house. Each of these rooms has a Nadumuttom as the central point. Uniquely, the bedrooms are L-shaped and each has a wonderful walk-in wardrobe and attached bath. Cross ventilation was adopted in all the rooms and this was to provide good, clean ventilation for all the rooms no matter what time of year it was. The bathrooms have dry and wet areas and are therefore spacious as well.
The kitchen definitely has a Kerala home design. It is adjacent to the family living room and has a great view of the central courtyard. As mentioned, the kitchen overhead cabinets are made of wood and glass. There are even spaces for the oven and fridge because the design was actually a C- shaped kitchen. There is a door that leads to the storage area where there are kitchen work areas too. There is a utility room for the washing machine. Clearly a Kerala design ensures that there is space for everything and that there is even space for events and parties in a traditional home.
